The problem wasn't that the basic concept and airframe was a stinker, it was more a matter of the state of engine technology at the time was not advanced enough. The aerodynamics of the airframe were sound and the airplane had some advanced features (all moveable tail for trim for example). Had an powerful enough engine had been available, the history of the XF-90 would have been very different. Long-range fighters in the era before aerial refueling always suffered these weight issues because of the necessity of carrying massive amounts of internal fuel to meet the range requirementsAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3685907526691141099.post-28820423499192253472013-12-15T10:26:45.272-06:002013-12-15T10:26:45.272-06:00I had an Aurora model of this plane. It was also underpowered.Rick Lubbockhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01070357751075383393noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3685907526691141099.post-49327449054924632452010-10-01T06:43:30.136-05:002010-10-01T06:43:30.136-05:00Very interesting. There was a lot of fighter aircraft development at that time. I was stationed at Shaw AFB in 1957 when the first operational RF-101 was delivered to replace the RF-84. A very impressive upgrade in performance. Engine performance was apparently a general limitation in the late 40s and early 50s. The first F3H Demons from McDonnell suffered from that problem. When I went to work for McDonnell in early 1958 those problems seemed to be over.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
